How To Choose An ESL Class

Posted on: 27 December 2017

Learning English as a second language can present some serious challenges. ESL classes have become abundant and it can be confusing when trying to decide which class you should choose. Here are some ways you can decide which ESL class is right for you.

Teacher Certification

Some schools will employ anyone who is a native speaker with a bachelor's degree to teach English classes. While this may seem like it would be enough qualification, this is not the case. It is best for your teacher to have had Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) training in addition to being a native speaker and having a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Teaching English as a second language requires a specific skill set that can only be learned by doing a course. The course that your teacher has done should be at least one hundred and twenty hours in length and should have included a teaching practicum.

Online vs Offline

Whether you do your ESL classes online or offline is purely a matter of choice. You should look for what best fits into your lifestyle and learning style. If you prefer to have someone physically present and have other students in a class to interact with, then you should do your course offline. If you prefer to have a more flexible schedule and think you will learn better through one-on-one interaction, then online is the right way to go. Online teachers will work with you through video and voice calls to help you learn the language.

Enhance Learning Through Conversation

There are several websites and a few apps that now offer conversation lessons on your phone or computer. These lessons may take place through video calls or voice call--you can choose which you prefer. The purpose of these interactions is to put what you are learning in your formal ESL classes to practical use. When choosing a conversational class you can be a little more relaxed in who you choose to help you; it is okay if the person does not have a TESL certificate. Getting conversation lessons with a native speaker means you will be able to practice the English language in a natural, conversational way. You and your tutor can talk about the weather, your day, holidays or anything else you would like during these sessions.

If you follow the tips given above, you should have no trouble choosing the best tutor and method of learning that will help you to master English quickly.
