However, there are a few mistakes people often make when applying to art colleges that hurt their chances of getting the kind of art education and subsequent jobs that they want.
Applying to Only the Most Famous Schools
Applying to some of the best colleges of art makes sense, but you have to understand that many other people are also going to do this. As a result, it would be more ideal if you also applied to some lesser-known art colleges as well. There's a misconception that the art college you attend is the most or only important factor in what job you get after school.
You can get a decent job in the arts graduating from any number of colleges. Don't make the mistake of applying to only what you consider the best schools and then giving up if you don't get in. Your dream deserves more than that. Those that make it in the arts are those that push further than others, even when something goes wrong.
Forgetting About Joint Auditions
Art-school admissions can be different than those for other colleges in that you have to sometimes participate in auditions. One good approach to this is to participate in joint auditions, which can give you a leg up in understanding what it takes to get into the college you want. Various sites online will help give you information on these unified auditions so you can plan ahead of time.
It's also important to take auditions seriously. You're not going to want to show up in T-shirt and jeans no matter how used to auditions you are. It's also important to avoid trying material that makes no sense for your age.
Focusing Only on "Official" Art Colleges
Other colleges can also have excellent art programs. You shouldn't limit yourself by only focusing on art colleges that cater specifically to arts students. There are great arts colleges in the Midwest, but within the limited set of colleges within the region, there are also colleges with programs in theatre, dance, and other subjects that you could still use to propel your career.
Make sure you evaluate and visit a number colleges in the area, both arts schools and other schools, in order to pick the program and area that will be the best fit for you.
